A big congratulations to everyone for making it through week one. Seriously, this is hardcore, whatever level you're doing, and sticking with it shows real determination, spirit, and a sprinkle of insanity to taste. Honestly, though, I think if you haven't done so already, reward yourself with some form of treat, whether that be 2 cheesecakes, 5 boxes of turtles, 8 bags of veggie thins, or a partridge in a pear tree.
Okay, perhaps I shouldn't be writing, because as I heard in a sitcom (I think How I Met Your Mother), "Nothing good happens after 2 am". Bah humbug.
I have a question for you all, or perhaps two: do you listen to music as you write? What do you listen to?

I appreciate you think I'm a total bad--- who listens to rap while pounding the keyboard...my confession, currently it's Hall & Oates singing "Man Eater" as I type this...however, I will say that I was listening to "Betty Davis Eyes" which seems kinda thug, since she "knows just what it takes to make a pro blush."

Congrats on getting the words in--you're right it was HIMYM that said "Nothing good happens after 2am" but that's got it's GREAT stuff that happens after 2am (like Gus--cat--waking me up at 4 because he needs supervision while he's sleeping, apparently).
I stand by "the hard pages are the best" mostly because when it's difficult it's so easy to give up, but in pushing through--even if the words are garbage--there's such a rush of "I did this."
Hal thanks for the Mozart but that would put me back to sleep in the morning. I have reached my goal and wrote 698 words bringing my running total to 5225 if my calculator is correct. So for now I will quote a great singer and "Let it be"

ReplyDeleteps. Was just thinking. If anyone would like to get together either before or after Thursday's meeting for an hour or so for a coffee/tea/juice/drink to vent and discuss what you/we are doing/not doing, I'd be very open to that.

Hal: While I do tend to kill a lot of people in my stories, oddly enough nobody has ever drowned in a pool ... yet! Okay, not that good of a line, so I'll just assume this is the name of a band. My musical selection is very wide ranging, and goes from BTO (action scenes), through to Mozart (when I'm trying to figure plots out). Lately it's been Doug & the Slugs for some stuff though. But occasionally I trip into Brule, Alan Parsons, and Spyro Gyra.

ReplyDeleteNatasha: okay, then you must freestyle rap on the side. Although Betty Davie Eyes sounds acceptably thug. Aw, poor Gus! Needs someone to pay attention to him in order to sleep. Usually it's the opposite for animals. I feel so bad for my brother and sister-in-law right now, because my niece's internal clock hasn't adjusted to the shift in time, and she's been getting up at 4:45 am each day. Well she slept in today until 5:00 am. The accuracy of her body clock blows me away.
No, I totally agree, it's a great feeling :-) Every day seems to be a bit of a struggle getting to the keyboard (procrastinating along the way) but I feel like a rockstar afterward. I introduced an impetuous teenager tonight which was fun.
Greg: thanks for the recommendation! Although I find my activities are always rushed whenever I listen to mash-up. I once played a board game with some friends listening to "Girl Talk" and it was the shortest game ever. Ah, the classical stream is a good choice.
OH MY GOD, that cover is horrible.
Howard: If you're having trouble with finicky characters not staying dead, you should listen to Bodies by Drowning Pool, where the chorus is "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor". It's a ridiculous song. I will admit ignorance to most of your selection, but I like how you change it up depending on the writing task :)
As for me, I listen to a lot of movie soundtracks when writing. Last night was King Kong; tonight was LOTR. I also listen to Explosions in the Sky as well, anything instrumental.
