How to get rid of writers' block?
I often times get bogged down by too much information that I collect for my writing, and I fall into the writers' block. Ideas dry up and the ink of my pen runs out! How can one overcome the writers' block?

Our philosophy is simple: fun and work, humour and support. We write all genres and in all styles and support each other by providing encouragement and helping each other develop thick skins in the face of industry rejections. We understand that as writers we must do the majority of the work ourselves and we embrace this by giving honest critiques mixed with gentle grace and lots of humour.
Honestly, sometimes I find it's just a matter of pushing through the pain. Sit and write. Maybe the first day you only get a sentence, the second day 1/2 a sentence, but if you keep going, eventually, you'll find a rhythm and the block will leave.

ReplyDeleteMohamed, I try and forget the pressure to write something "good". Even if I start with "It was a dark and stormy night..." I eventually get into a groove where I'm shutting out that inner critic. For me, most of my blocks are due to my inner critic insisting that I come up with something brilliant.
DeleteKevin J. Anderson had a quote I really like: "It doesn't have to be good, but it has to be done."
A book that I've got on my to-read list is "On Writer's Block" by Victoria Nelson. It's been highly recommended and it might be worth a look.
I haven't had it often, but when I do get it for a particular story, I switch to a different piece of work and that helps a lot - I've found it has to be something quite different though.
ReplyDeleteThank you guys, I haven't even been following the posts lately. I'm just seeing these posts now. Thank you all.
