2014 Alberta Screenwriters Initiative
Call for submissions
Deadline for Submissions: March 10, 2014

The Alberta Screenwriters Initiative was created in 2007 by the Alberta Film Partners with the assistance of the Alberta Association of Motion Picture and Television Unions (AAMPTU) to facilitate the development of screenwriters in this province. The Initiative recognizes the importance of story in the creation of filmed entertainment and the necessity to actively encourage and develop the voices of Alberta writers in film. The Writers Guild of Alberta administers the Initiative on behalf of the AAMPTU. The Initiative is supported by proceeds from the Annual Film Industry Wrap Party.

AAMPTU is seeking submissions for the 2014 Alberta Screenwriters Initiative. Feature film scripts of any genre, to a maximum length of 250 pages, from an Alberta based writer, are eligible. Limited to one entry per person.

The Initiative is open to new and experienced screenwriters. The assessment of script/ screenplays includes evaluation of the writer’s creativity, original voice, theme, character development, plot and overall quality of writing. Any and all genres (e.g. horror, romantic comedy, action, animation etc.) will be equally weighted. All entries must be submitted in industry standard feature-length screenplay format.

From all eligible submissions, a blind jury will select three ranked winners. The first place script/screenplay receives a workshop with a carefully matched experienced story editor or screenwriter and a cash prize of $1000.00. The 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive story notes, editorial feedback and $500.00 and $250.00 respectively.

AAMPTU will arrange a series of in-person meetings between the first place writer and consulting story editor/screenwriter. The writer and consultant will focus on analyzing the original script/screenplay, rewriting, rethinking and planning for further development. The writer should leave these meetings with a clear process and vision of how to proceed to the next draft.

Submission deadline is March 10, 2014.
